THE 2012/2013 FOOTBALL SEASON: ITALIAN SERIE A CONTENDERS

This work is an analysis of the first tier football league in Italy (Serie A). The basis for this analysis is to have a prediction of the teams that would have a top 5 league table placement at the end of the season. This prediction will be achieved via the THE ITALIAN SERIE A CONTENDERS RATING SCALE. The aforesaid link entails the contenders.

These said, it was projected in the prequel work to this that the 5 teams that are more likely to have a top 5 league table placement at the end of the 2012/13 Serie A season are Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, AS Roma, and Udinese.

   JUVENTUS

Juventus, also referred to as the old ladies is the most successful club in the top flight football league in Italy.
Juve clinched the 2011/12 Serie A by recording a 5 star performance, courtesy an unprecedented 43 matches unbeaten run comprising 36 matches in the Serie A and 7 in the coppa Italia which was abruptly ended by Napoli in the finals of the coppa Italia, a match that ended 2 goals to nil, in favour of Napoli.

Though high flying, the Serie A title holders have also had their very ugly times. According to cnn.com “the Turin giants were stripped off the titles won in 2005 and 2006 and relegated to Serie B because of their involvement, along with several other top clubs, in match fixing.”

But that sad experience has now been speedily forgotten with the 2012/13 triumph being their 28th league title (excluding the 2 stripped titles) and most importantly, their first since the match fixing scandal that got the Seria A giants embarrassingly relegated to Serie B. This relegation got Juventus playing in Serie B as against Serie A for the first time in the history of the club.

With the 2011/12 triumph, no doubt Juve have got their once upon a time relinquished dominance of the Serie A rejuvenated.

So far in the 2012/13 season Juventus have enjoyed an unbeaten run in the 8 games played so far. This run added to last season’s entails Juve has had an unbeaten run in 47 league matches.

In 8 matches played, Juventus have won 7 matches and drawn 1 which entails 22 points in total.

*Facts

i.          Juventus has won the Italian Serie A 28 times.

ii.         In the last 5 seasons (2007/08 - 2011/12), Juventus has had a top 5 finish 3 times.

Entry and Exit Transfer Pick:

Lúcio

Lúcio is a Brazil international that has a rich pedigree of the beautiful game. His CV includes Internacional which was his first club and one in his native country, German Bundesliga clubs, Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich. His most recent club was Inter Milan. While at Inter Milan, Lucio spent 3 years, from the 2009- 2012 seasons and had the 2010 being his most triumphant season as he was very instrumental to Inter Milan winning all 3 competitions they took part in as thus, Serie A, Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League.

Also, his days at Bayern Munich were very successful as among other tournaments he triumphed over, were the German Bundesliga in the 2004–05, 2005–06 and 2007–08 seasons.

Though 34 years old, Lúcio’s experience and winning mentality has got his entry into Juventus a move rightly undertaken and expectedly, he is to have a very effective contribution to the team.

           Alessandro Del Piero

Del Piero spent the bulk of his playing years in the black and white stripes of Juventus. Having made just 14 appearances for Padova over two seasons (1991/1992 and 1992/1993), Del Piero joined Juventus in 1993 and went on to make a phenomenally impactful 19 seasons with the Turin giants that got him indeed an indispensable player for the club.

According to wikipeda.com, he played in Juventus F.C. for 19 years (11 years as captain) and holds the club records for goals (290) and appearances (705).

In the 19 years spent with Juventus, Del Piero among many titles won are 6 Italian Serie A and 1 Serie B titles.

With these feats achieved, it is no questioning the fact that the exit of the well cherished Juventus veteran will be greatly felt by the club.

AC MILAN

AC Milan is a Milan based club. I refer to the club as being a twin of Inter Milan, which is another Milan based club.

AC Milan last won the Italian Serie A title in the 2010/11 season and in total, have won the Italian Serie A title 18 times.

In the 2011/12 Serie A season, Milan was placed second on the final match day. But the current campaign does look cloudy with regards to AC Milan having a top flight finish, let alone making the 2012/13 season their 19th Serie A triumph.

The earlier assertion is due to the fact that AC Milan have got themselves being a depleted and below par football club-side following the exit of top goal scorer, Zlantan Ibrahimovich, Mark van Bommel, Thiago Silva and club veteran, Alessandro Nesta.

With AC Milan after 8 matches being jaded, as noted in their lackluster performances in the current campaign that has got the club having 7 points in 8 matches played so far and 15 points behind league leaders Juventus, AC Milan having a top 5 finish at the end of the season is one that could be perceived as being a miracle.

However, with the current campaign being young, and 32 matches left to play, ruling AC Milan out of a top notch finish is one that could indeed be a big blow to anyone who does so.

*Facts

ii.         In the last 5 seasons (2007/08 - 2011/12), AC Milan has had a top 5 finish 5 times.

Entry and Exit Transfer Pick:

Nigel De Jong

Nigel de Jong is a midfielder from the Netherlands. Before joining AC Milan, he spent 4 years at current premier league champions, Manchester City and was among the victorious Manchester City team that won the FA Cup in 2011 and the English Premier League in the 2011/12 season. He joined Manchester City in the 2008/09 season from German club, Hamburg.

De Jong has his football roots in Ajax, a club he spent four years with. In his first season at the club, precisely in 2002, he won the Amsterdam Talent of the year.

With Nigel De Jong’s acquisition, it is expected that he will have a remarkable impact in the club. This expectation is no doubt a carryover of his effect in Manchester City. To this end, according to Wikipedia.com, “By the end of the season (2009) he had become a firm fans' favourite as well as being one of new manager Roberto Mancini's first picks as defensive midfielder as the team narrowly missed out on a Champions League berth.

In four years at Manchester City, he had a total of 104 premier league games, including a game played in the 2012/13 prior to joining AC Milan.

Zlatan Ibrahimović

Ibrahimović is a Swedish footballer that brilliantly paid his dues while in the red and black stripes of AC Milan. This is evident in his superb goal scoring feat in the 2 seasons he spent with the club.

According to Wikipedia.com, in a total of 61 Serie A matches played over 2 seasons, he scored 42 goals for the 18 time Serie A champions. Ibrahimović was the 2009 and 2012 Serie A top scorer. In 2009, he was an Inter Milan player.

The exit of the 2008, 2009 and 2011 Serie A footballer of the year is no doubt a heavy blow to AC Milan that will take a while for the club to recover from, as his attack prowess is one of a kind in which having a replacement will not come easy.

No wonder AC Milan have so far in 8 matches, scored a disappointing 9 goals and conceded 10, thus having a deficit goals difference of 1.

One thing is evident, AC Milan are missing the brilliance of Ibrahimović.

INTER MILAN

Internazionale, as Inter Milan is also called is a club I refer to as a twin of AC Milan. Interestingly, going by the number of Serie A titles won, they are indeed twins as both teams have won the Italian Serie A 18 times. The last time Inter Milan won the league was the 2009/2010 season and prior to that they had a 4 straight years triumph in the Serie A, precisely from the 2005/06 to the 2009/10 seasons. It is pertinent to note that the 2005/06 triumph of Inter Milan was as a result of the Italian football scandal which led to first place team, Juventus getting relegated to Serie B and second placed AC Milan, hit with points deduction.

So far in the 2012/13 season, Inter Milan are having a rejuvenated performance in comparison with the 2011/12 season when they finished in 6th place.

In 8 matches played in the 2012/13 season, Inter Milan is placed in fourth place, 4 points behind league leaders, Juventus.

Due to this encouraging start to the season, there is no questioning the fact that Inter Milan finishing well above the 6th position it had last season is imminent.

*Facts

i.          Inter Milan has won the Italian Serie A title 18 times.

ii.         In the last 5 seasons (2007/08 - 2011/12), Inter Milan has had a top 5 finish 4 times.

2012/2013 INTER MILAN TRANSFER LIST…

IN (CLUB PURCHASED OR “LOANED” FROM):

Antonio Cassano (Milan);    Rodrigo Palacio (Genoa);   Simone Benedetti (Torino);

Enrico Alfonso (Chievo);     Felice Natalino (Genoa);   Matías Silvestre (Palermo “Loan”);

Samir Handanoviç (Udinese)

OUT (CLUB SOLD OR “LOANED” TO)

Julio César (QPR);   Alen Stevanovic  (Torino);   Matteo Solini (Chievo);   Maicon (Man City)

Angelo Palombo (Sampdoria “Returning from Loan”);      Marco Faraoni (Udinese)

Mauro Matías Zárate (Lazio “End of loan”);      Simone Benedetti (Spezia “Loan”)

Lucio (Juventus);     Diego Forlan Corazo (Internacional);        Giampaolo Pazzini (Milan)

Entry and Exit Transfer Pick:

   Antonio Cassano

The signing of Cassano from rivals AC Milan has so far been a signing in the right direction for Inter. In 8 matches played for Inter Milan, Cassano has scored 5 goals as against the 7 goals he scored over 2 seasons in 33 matches while playing for AC Milan. In the 2010/11 season, Cassano scored 4 matches in 17 games, while in the 2010/11 season, he scored 3 goals in 16 matches.

Prior to playing for AC Milan, Cassano played for Sampdoria and Real Madrid. Others are Roma and Bari. According to Wikipedia.com, Bari was the first club Cassano played for.

These said, among other players, the signing of Antonio Cassano by Inter Milan has got the Milan based club on course to have a much better season than the last, as evident in the encouraging performance by Inter Milan.

    Júlio César Soares Espíndola

Júlio César is a Brazilian international goalkeeper that is one of the best in the world. He spent 7 years at Inter Milan. Having displaced then number one goalkeeper, Francesco Toldo, César established himself as a keeper number one goal keeper of the club.

While at Inter Milan César won the Italian Serie A at a remarkable 5 straight times. This was from the 2005/2006 to the 2009/2010 seasons, including the 2009 treble winning season of the UEFA Champions League and Coppa Italia.

According to Wikipedia, “in 2009, IFFHS named him as the third best goalkeeper in the world, behind only Iker Casillas and Gianluigi Buffon. He has also been awarded the Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year in 2009 and in 2010”.

With these feats acheieved, there is no questioning the fact that the goalkeeping heroics of Júlio César will be missed by Inter.

AS ROMA

AS Roma has won the Italian Serie A 3 times, the last time being the 2000/2001 season.

Roma have so far since the birth of the Italian top flight league in 1898, recorded a remarkable level of consistency except the 1950/51 season when they got relegated. But asides this time, Roma has since gaining promotion back to the top flight, maintained a significant presence in the Italian Serie A.

Though the 3 Serie A titles won by AS Roma is nothing compared to the 28 by Juventus or 18 by the twin Milan clubs (Inter Milan and AC Milan), AS Roma having an encouraging ending to the 2012/13 Serie A season should not be written off.

In the last 5 years, AS Roma has had a top 5 finish 2 times in which they finished in second place in the 2007/08 and 2009/10 seasons.

Notably as evident in the Contenders Rating Table as seen in the link; THE ITALIAN SERIE A CONTENDERS RATING SCALE, AS Roma are placed in third place with 8 marks, just behind league leaders, Juventus.

With AS Roma currently lying in an encouraging 5th position with 14 points from 8 matches and 32 games left for all 20 teams to slug it out with regards to winning the 2012/13 Serie A season and having a comfortable finish to avert relegation and qualify for the European competitions, namely UEFA EUROPA Cup and UEFA Champions League, Roma will no doubt exert the required tenacity for a remarkable season finish.

*Facts

i.          AS Roma has won the Italian Serie A three times.

ii.         In the last 5 seasons (2007/08 - 2011/12), AS Roma has had a top 5 finish twice times.

Entry and Exit Transfer Pick

Michael Bradley

Bradley is an American international who plays as a central midfielder. According to Wikipedia.com, among the many clubs Bradley has played for are Metrostars which was his first club as a professional footballer and a club in his native country. Since leaving the US, he has played for SC Heerenveen, his first club out of the US.

Also, he has played for Borussia Mönchengladbach, then Aston Villa which was a loan move in the January transfer window. In his 3 years with Borussia Mönchengladbach between the 2008/2009 and 2010/2011 seasons prior to his loan to Aston Villa, he had a significant role in which he made 28, 29 and 19 appearances in the 2008/09, 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons with 5, 3 and 2 goals respectively.

However, his immediate past club prior to signing for AS Roma is Chievo Verona. In the 2011/12 season, Bradly made 31 appearances out of a possible 38 for Chievo and had a goal to his credit.

No doubt, with the acquisition of Bradly, he will be very instrumental to AS Roma having the required bite to having a more successful campaign than the last

Fernando Gago

Gago is an Argentine international footballer that started his club career with native club Boca Juniors.

Having spent three seasons with Boca from the 2004/05 to the 2006/07 seasons, his impact at the club attracted Spanish giant Real Madrid which led to the most successful club in Europe signing him in 2006, alongside his compatriot Gonzalo Higuaín.

However, according to Wikipedia.com; “on 31 August 2011, Fernando Gago moved on loan to Serie A side Roma with a view to a permanent move, until the end of the 2011-12 season, after over a 100 appearances for Real Madrid in La Liga during his 4 and a half years stay at the club.”

The above quote reveals one thing; Gago was very impactful in his years at Real Madrid and his season loan move to Roma was not left out as he made 29 appearances, scoring one goal.

 UDINESE

According to Wikipedia.com, Udinese Calcio was founded in 1896 which makes it the second oldest club in Italy, after Genoa.

Of all the Contenders in view, Udinese is the only club that is yet to win a Serie A title. Udinese in the last two seasons had a top 5 finish two times. These 2 times, were the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons. In the 2011/12 season, they finished 3rd behind AC Milan and in the preceding season, they had a fourth place finish.

But will they have a second place finish in the 2012/13 season, time will tell.

*Facts

i.          Udinese has never won the Italian Serie A title.

ii.         In the last 5 seasons (2007/08 - 2011/12) Udinese has had a top 5 finish 2 times.

Entry and Exit Transfer Pick:

 Allan Marques Loureiro

According to Wikipedia.com, Allan was born on January 8, 1991 and he currently plays as a right back and midfielder for Italian club Udinese. Allan was promoted to the professional Vasco da Gama in 2009 by coach Dorival Júnior.

Wikipedia.com went further; “after helping the club return to the hill to the elite of the Brasileirão and champion of the series B, Allan was injured and thus could not play the Campeonato Carioca or the Brazil Cup 2010. After recovering from the injury, Allan returned to the juniors to get match fitness again. He returned to professionals in the last round of the Brasileirão before the break of the World Cup and Cup of Time, friendly tournament that Vasco played in the parade for the World Cup and took the championship with the participation of Allan scoring a goal in the game Vasco 3x2 Coritiba.”

With his brilliance on the beautiful game, based on the words of Wikipedia.com, it is expected that Allan, though still very young at 21 years old will have a remarkable impact on Udinese’s quest at having a remarkable season.

Allan was signed by Udinese on 4 June 2012.

   Kwadwo Asamoah

According to wikipeida.com; Asamoah was scouted playing for a local based club which belongs to Kamara and was recommended by the scout Mr. Charles Mensah Gapson to Alhaji Sly Tetteh, CEO of Liberty Professionals. He joined Swiss club Bellinzona and was loaned to Italian side Torino in the winter of 2007-08.”

Based on the information in the preceding paragraph, it could be concluded that Asamoah’s loan was indeed the turnaround to the pacy rise in his football career.

Wikipdia.com states further; “in June 2008 Asamoah was signed by Serie A club Udinese. He eventually established himself for both club and country. After some good performances at the 2010 World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations, he became a target of top clubs in Europe.”

With these words said about Asamoah, no wonder his days at Udinese were numbered, which led to Juventus poaching him.

No doubt, his exit from Udinese will be greatly felt due to the phenomenal impact he had with the club during his sojourn.

2012/13 ITALIAN SERIE A FINAL LEAGUE TABLE PLACEMENT

Having analyzed the 2012/13 Italian Serie A Contenders, my projection with regards to the placement of these teams is shown in the table below.

From the table above, it is anticipated that at the end of the season, Juventus will retain the Serie A title, thus winning the 2012/13 season.

On the other hand, Inter Milan, AS Roma, AC Milan and Udinese are expected to end the season in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th place respectively.

However, it is pertinent to point out that due to the high level of inconsistency of performance over the years by Italian clubs season in, season out, of these contenders at least 3 teams will make the cut. This entails that there could be a replacement of any of these 5 teams and if such is to happen, my guess will be either or both Udinese and AC Milan will be replaced by Napoli and perhaps Lazio.

But remember the season is still very young and with 8 matches played, most especially AC Milan should not be ruled out of having a top 5 finish.

This is my take on final league table placement, so what is yours?
